Passion is overrated.

We are told all our lives that passion is important.

Passion is what sets us apart from the crowd.

But that isn’t true.

Passion will not get you very far in life, and we cannot rely on it alone to make meaningful change.

Think of passion as a small explosion.

It’s a sudden burst of energy, destroying any obstacle in its path… until it runs out of energy.

Purpose, on the other hand, is a slow burn.

It takes time and continual effort to keep the fire burning, ideally forever.

To have purpose is to serve an idea more important than just yourself.

Whether that idea is to better the lives of starving children in Africa, or to change the world with a tech product, it doesn’t matter.

To quote Ryan Holiday,

“Passion is form over function”.

“Purpose is function, function, function”.

Passion is fluff without any filling.

Purpose is a dense, heavy ingot of iron.
