I have an original idea!

No you don’t.

Original ideas don’t really exist.

This may have been different a few hundred years ago when there were still many things to be invented, but these days truly original ideas are few and far between.

But that’s not a bad thing.

It’s only bad when you blatantly copy someone else's work and credit it as your own, don’t do that.

So how do we come up with new ideas?

Inspiration and experimentation.

Look around for artists, themes, and bodies of work that inspire you and piques your interest.

Once you’ve found inspiration, then experiment with it.

Combine it with each other, rotate it, change the colour, twist it, bend it, and squeeze it until you find a new perspective.

This is how originality is born in the modern day.

We must use the information already available in the world and look at them in a different way.

Only then can we find new and novel ways of thinking to solve the world's increasingly complex problems.
