A well designed workspace is worth investing time and money into. It can boost productivity and make work far more enjoyable.
It also it prevents us from making yet another excuse to procrastinate. And in my books, anything to help the habit of procrastination is worth investing in.
So how do we make our workspaces more inviting?
Get a more comfortable chair.
You may not appreciate this now (depending on how old you are), but buying a good quality chair will will save your back in the future. It’ll also minimise distractions and the constant frustration of having to move around in your chair very 5 minutes to get the right sitting position.
Use a different room (or space in your room) to work in.
Separation from your personal life means that you can focus more on the work at hand, it primes your brain to go into ‘work mode’ and forget about the things around the room, like the pile of laundry that you forgot to wash yet again.
And when your workday is done, you can move into another room and forget about work altogether!
Use a monitor or laptop stand
If you use a monitor, make sure it’s a the right height for your head. The last thing you want is neck pain along with the back pain from your uncomfortable chair. And if you don’t have a monitor, get a laptop stand for your laptop. It promotes better posture and ensures you’re not craning your neck to look down at the screen.
Sit next to a window
Natural light is a great mood booster. It prevents us from getting sleepy, and it also brightens the room in a way so that we feel less dead inside.
Try to looking out your window every 20 minutes. It lets your eyes (and brain) rest from looking at a screen for prolonged periods of time.
Make it your own
Workspaces (or desk setups) are highly personal. We all have different needs for our workday, and we each have a certain style. So why not have some fun designing your space? Add plants, drawers, work ornaments, notebooks, papers, and post-it notes to your desk; it makes work feel less boring and more engaging.
I hope that you implement some of these tips to improve your workspace. I wish you a productive day. Don't forget to rest too!
